Latest Updates : institution of mental health and neuro sciences kashmir - The staff of Addiction Treatment Facility of the Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (IMHANS), Kashmir, under the leadership of nodal officer Prof. Dr. Yasir Hassan Rather, actively conducts critical drug awareness programs. These sessions educate students on substance misuse, its severe health impacts, and coping mechanisms to overcome the growing addiction crisis in the region.Substance abuse has rapidly emerged as one of the most pressing public health and societal challenges in Kashmir. Driven by multifaceted factors such as peer pressure, socioeconomic stress, and the easy availability of illicit substances, the rise in addiction cases—particularly among the younger demographic—calls for immediate, large-scale intervention. In response to this escalating crisis, the specialized team at IMHANS, Kashmir, spearheads sustained, educational outreach. Guided by Prof. Dr. Yasir Hassan Rather, these outreach initiatives aim to transform students from vulnerable targets of substance misuse into proactive, well-informed ambassadors of change within their communities. The core objective of these targeted programs at IMHANS is to shatter the myths surrounding drugs while emphasizing their harsh realities. During these sessions, experts outline the devastating impacts drugs have on human health, destroying both the mind and the body. Prolonged substance abuse alters brain chemistry, severely impairs cognitive function, and deeply damages mental health, leading to disorders like depression and anxiety. Furthermore, the physical consequences of intravenous drug use and opioid dependence are catastrophic, frequently resulting in chronic illnesses, infectious diseases, and an alarming risk of fatal overdoses. Beyond the physiological toll, the lectures make students acutely aware of the bad consequences on society, including the financial ruin of families, the breakdown of social structures, and the psychological trauma inflicted on loved ones.To overcome this deeply rooted menace, the awareness campaigns stress the urgent need for a holistic, community-based strategy. Prof. Dr. Yasir Hassan Rather and his team focus heavily on equipping students with essential life skills to build psychological resilience against peer pressure, curiosity, and emotional distress. The IMHANS staff educates students on healthy stress-coping mechanisms, such as sports, physical fitness, pursuing hobbies, and cultivating strong, communicative support networks with friends and family.Overcoming drug addiction also requires a shift in how society views substance users. The programs emphasize that addiction is a treatable medical condition rather than a moral failure, encouraging students to erase the stigma that prevents victims from seeking professional medical assistance. By utilizing the clinical expertise available at the Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences, affected individuals can access evidence-based rehabilitation and counseling.Ultimately, these awareness events by IMHANS act as a call to action. By arming young minds with factual health insights and actionable life skills, the institute fosters a culture of early intervention and open communication. With the youth leading the charge, guided by professional medical experts and programs like Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir, society can successfully break the cycle of addiction and pave the way for a healthier, drug-free future.
